“Blues and Brews” Slated for First Fridays Event at Habersham

Beaufort, SC - September 28, 2011 - The Habersham Marketplace welcomes Ann Munger and Pearls Before Noon to its village of restaurants, retail shops and services. Pearls Before Noon is an antique store boasting one-of-a-kind finds, including vintage items gathered nationwide. Munger travels from South Carolina to the Northern Midwest regularly and finds some of her most prized, unique or interesting items at estate sales, auctions and flea markets. She plans to launch an online version of the store in the near future.

“I have thought about opening an antique shop for years,” Munger said. “I’ve collected antiques my entire life and love the treasure hunt of finding unique items.”

The demand for vintage is on the rise. Sparked by the popularity of shows like “Mad Men,” Baby Boomers, like Munger, are re-discovering their childhood in vintage and mid-century modern items and collectibles

Beaufort Hosts Second 'Lt. Dan Weekend' Event for Injured Veterans

For the second year in a row, the Independence Fund is hosting actor Gary Sinise as he leads his Lt. Dan Band in a concert honoring our severely injured veterans as part of "Lt. Dan Weekend 2". On Thursday, September 15th the award-winning documentary "Lt. Dan Band: For the Common Good" will be screened outdoors at Beaufort's Harry C. Chambers Waterfront Park and free to attend. Director/Producer, Jonathan Flora, has been touring the film and hosting special screenings across the country in locations where the Lt. Dan Band has performed. As part of the weekend-long event, the public is invited to see the film Thursday and come back to the park on Friday, September 16th for the live performance!

Proceeds Directed to Women Build 2011

Beaufort, SC - August 19, 2011 - The Habersham Marketplace will host Lowcountry Habitat for Humanity’s “Jazz on the Lawn” featuring local blues band Blue Mudd on Thursday, August 25, 2011, beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for $20 by calling the Habitat for Humanity office at (843) 522-3500 or at the Habersham Marketplace beginning at 6 p.m. the evening of the event. Proceeds from the event will directly benefit Women Build 2011.

“We’re thrilled to offer our marketplace as a venue for this important event,” said Habersham Marketplace Merchant’s Council President Leslie Pickel. “We want to help give back to our community any way we can and are honored to host.”

Women Build is a project created by Habitat for Humanity International, and involves the funding and construction of a house by local women. This year’s Women Build is Lowcountry Habitat’s second of these initiatives– the first Women Build was in 2007 and resulted in a house on Prince Street in downtown Beaufort.

The organization generally begins building when they’ve raised $25,000, which is approximately half of an entire house sponsorship. “Jazz on the Lawn” is one of several efforts to meet the halfway point.

Owned and operated by farmer David Hislop, SILO’s mission is to provide locally sourced food to residents of Beaufort County while educating them about where and how the food they eat is produced.

An off-spring of the Habersham Farmer’s Market, SILO was created by a group of local food enthusiasts as an opportunity for local growers and food purveyors to sell their products directly to its members. SILO is an illustration of Habersham’s goal to maintain its reputation as a model for sustainable development, providing a direct link between urbanism and agrarianism.

Products are sold directly through the SILO shop front in the Habersham Marketplace or online at http://www.silo-beaufort.com, with the bulk being purchased online. Like traditional farmers markets, the growers and producers pay a sellers’ fee for the ability to sell their products directly to customers through SILO. Customers pay a minimal annual membership fee which helps cover the operating expenses of SILO and enables them to participate in events like tastings, cooking demonstrations, lectures, etc.

Additionally, the concept offers sellers the ability to set wholesale prices for any products they choose. Only wholesale buyers, like restaurants and schools, will be able to view and receive these prices online. The goal is to make the locating and buying of locally grown items even easier for those who prepare for numerous numbers of people.

“The relationship between the sellers and farmers remains an integral part of the buying process,” said Hislop. “People know what is available to them each week, can choose exactly what they want and pick up everything in one central location. It’s local, it’s fresh and people feel empowered by their ability to choose ahead of time what foods they eat and where they come from.”

SILO is located at 7A Market St. in the Habersham Marketplace. Customers may make their purchases Monday morning through Wednesday evening weekly and pick up and pay for their order each Friday after 4 p.m. Orders are packaged in reusable, insulated SILO bags that are returned at the next pick-up.

North Augusta City Council Studies Habersham

The North Augusta City Council recently traveled from Aiken County, SC to the coastal region of Beaufort, SC with the intent of studying the success and planning strategies of two major Beaufort projects: The Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park and the neighboring town of Habersham, SC. The Habersham Marketplace, the commercial entrance to the town, along with the town's engineering principles, were the focus of the group's time at Habersham. The North Augusta City Council looks to apply some ideas from the visit to similar projects in the Aiken area to include Hammond's Ferry and North Augusta's riverfront vicinity.

Councilman Carolyn Baggott commented, "I was impressed with the private development of Habersham, without public funding, and the fact that we got a lot of good ideas from the beautiful waterfront development of Beaufort that possibly we can use when we are developing our riverfront for the use of the whole community." CNU Lecture Series Welcomes Spring Speaker

As part of the 2011 Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) Lecture Series, the Beaufort Chapter of the CNU Carolinas is proud to bring Mary Newsom to the Lowcountry for our Spring lecture. Mary will be speaking on community building and growth this coming April 21st at 6:30 p.m.

Mary Newsom is an associate editor, editorial board member, op-ed columnist and blogger at The Charlotte Observer. She’s been writing about cities, urban design, neighborhoods and the environment for more than a dozen years. She was a founding member of the Charlotte Urban Forum, which, sadly, is no more. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, Mary spent the 2007-08 academic year as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard, and previously was a Knight Fellow in Community Building at the University of Miami.

This event is part of the ongoing 2011 series which has also included James Kunstler and will further included topics on sustainable agriculture and economics in the summer and fall. Berto’s Grill joins Maggie’s Pub & Eatery and Piace Pizza in offering a variety of dining options in the Marketplace. Berto’s has been a regular fixture at Habersham’s Farmers Market and the Marketplace is thrilled to have him!

Berto’s Grill Tex-Mex owner, Norberto Lopez, moved to the U.S. from Mexico in 1989. He spent the first fourteen years of his career working for Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in New Jersey, eventually working his way up to head chef for his last six years at the restaurant. In 2003, he moved his wife and four children to Beaufort to join his mother and sister and to fulfill his dream of opening his own restaurant. Locals will remember him from his restaurants on Boundary Street (where Bricks is now located) and in Shell Point. Berto’s unique focus on handcrafted Mexican food, the authentic décor, and his customer service experience, honed by his years at Ruth’s Chris, will serve him well in his new location in the Habersham Marketplace. “I’m looking forward to being part of Habersham and to serving customers from all over Beaufort,” says Berto.

Berto’s Grill is open seven days a week and their hours are Sunday-Thursday, 11:00 am to 9:00 pm and Friday-Saturday, 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. Beaufort, SC - March 21, 2011 - The third annual Beaufort Twilight Run, sanctioned by USA Track & Field and organized as a fundraiser by Riverview Charter School, attracted over 1,400 runners and a total crowd of 2,000 participants to the race held on Saturday, March 19th in the town of Habersham. The reputation of the Twilight Run has grown over the past three years, and this year runners came from all across the country, including one couple that traveled from Anchorage, Alaska. This year, a new course record was set for the signature chip timed and certified 8K race. For the first time, the 5K race was also chip timed. Kids, including many Riverview students, ran a ¼ mile fun run in Habersham’s Marketplace. Danny White, RMS Sports co-owner and USATF/IAAF approved measurer has said of this race, “The course is one of the most scenic courses in South Carolina, there’s no doubt. Event organizer, Jody Hayward, and race director, Lauren Kelly, were thrilled with the participation level and community support for both the race and for Riverview Charter School. Riverview Charter School is a free, public school authorized by the Beaufort County School District and open to all Beaufort County students (K-8th Grade). “It went very well,” said Hayward, “This event continues to grow every year and already we can’t wait for next year! Thank you to our fantastic sponsors; without their support and dedication, the Twilight Run wouldn’t be the great family event that it is.” The event is the single biggest fundraising endeavor for the charter school and with the help of over 120 enthusiastic volunteers this year raised over $30,000. The races were followed by a oyster roast catered by Sea Eagle Market and Stan Gray and the Stingrays kept the crowd moving long after the races were done.

National Speaker Praises Coastal Town of Habersham

The Carolinas Chapter of the Congress for New Urbanism kicked off its first lecture series on February 16th, 2011 at the Technical College of the Lowcountry in Beaufort, SC. The first invited speaker of the series was nationally recognized author and social critic, James Howard Kunstler. Kunstler has lectured at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, MIT, RPI, the University of Virginia and many other colleges, and he has appeared before many professional organizations such as the AIA , the APA, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Kunstler has been a staff writer for Rolling Stone Magazine and is a regular contributor to the New York Times. Kunstler is best known for his books The Geography of Nowhere (1994), a history of American suburbia and urban development, and the more recent The Long Emergency (2005), where he argues that declining oil production is likely to result in the end of industrialized society as we know it and force Americans to live in smaller-scale, localized, agrarian (or semi-agrarian) communities. He has written a science fiction novel conjecturing such a culture in the future, World Made by Hand in 2008. He also gives lectures on topics related to suburbia, urban development, and the challenges of what he calls "the global oil predicament" and a resultant change in the “American Way of Life.”

During his brief visit to the Beaufort area, Kunstler had the opportunity to stay in the neighboring town of Habersham, one of the Nation's premiere New Urbanist developments. Being a leading proponent of New Urbanism, Habersham was flattered to have garnered the following quote from James Kunstler on his visit: "My gawd, what a beautiful place (Habersham) is. A really stunning job. It prompted me to wonder, ruefully: what is it about the rest of America that we can't build anything -- or even arrange anything... even little parts of things -- as good as this!"

Beaufort, SC - January 18, 2011 - The Habersham Marketplace in Beaufort will host its 4th Annual Chili Cook – Off Saturday, February 5, from 1-4 p.m. Contestants are invited to compete in the Amateur category for $20, Restaurant Chefs/Professional category for $40 and Service Personnel are invited to participate free of charge. Habersham Farmers Market Hosts Last Market of 2010

Beaufort, SC - December 14, 2010 - The Habersham Farmers Market in Beaufort, SC will host its final market before Christmas on Friday, December 17, beginning at 4 p.m. The weekly market will close out 2010 with live music provided by Laizee Rivers. Its vendors will provide last minute gift opportunities and fresh produce from local growers. Lady’s Island Oyster Company will be steaming local oysters for patrons as they shop for unique handmade gifts. Margot Silva, from Habersham, sells her hand-crafted shoulder bags, purses and table runners made of beautiful patterns and fabrics. Special items from food purveyors include Jannie Smith’s Earthquake Cake, BabyCake Homemade’s Candy Cane Cheesecake and Claudine Creperie’s Banana and Nutella Crepe, to name a few.

Of course, the local growers are always the centerpiece of the farmers market. Otis Daise has a weekly truckload of fresh vegetables from his fields on St. Helena Island including collards, sweet potatoes, onions, beets, broccoli and more. Brant Family Farms provides heirloom and specialty varieties of produce year-round and currently has lettuces, radishes and arugula this time of year that are grown chemical free. Habersham Farms CSA also has a weekly spot at the market to hand out their shares to Beaufort area CSA members. Another mainstay at the Habersham market is Walnut Hill Acres who is currently picking and selling oranges and grapefruits from their farm in Okatie.

Beaufort, SC - August 26th, 2010 - The Habersham Marketplace in Beaufort, SC, will host its fifth “First Fridays” event on Friday, September 3, beginning at 4 p.m. The event is part of a free and ongoing summer series open to the Beaufort community. “First Fridays” events boast an expanded Farmer’s Market with local and regional growers, along with arts, crafts, specialty food vendors and live music from 4-9 p.m.

Special guest Heidi Charest, a Beaufort local and Lady’s Island firefighter, will be on hand representing America’s Female Firefighters’ (AFF) 2011 calendar. Charest is one of 12 women featured for exemplifying good health, fitness, moral character and dedication to their profession. Proceeds from calendar sales at First Fridays will benefit AFF’s mission to raise funds for the benefit of burn survivors throughout the United States. Part of the $50,000 raised from the sale of the 2010 calendar helped benefit the Burn Camp of St. Christophers on Seabrook Island in the Lowcountry.

Town’s newest restaurant urges Beaufortonians to “Enjoy!”

Beaufort, SC - April 8, 2010 - Habersham’s Marketplace continues to grow with the recent opening of Piace Pizza at 5B Market. Chef and owner, Brian Ferry, opened his doors mid-February and they opened with a bang! Piace’s first day just happened to coincide with the Beaufort Twilight Run and Oyster Roast – an annual fundraiser that brought well over 1,500 people to the Habersham Marketplace. He managed to prepare and serve over 95 pizzas that day and he and his staff have never looked back.

Chef Brian Ferry comes from a long line of restaurateurs - first in Philadelphia where they owned an Italian restaurant and comedy club and for the last eighteen years, right here in Beaufort County. When Brian decided that the time was right to expand, choosing Beaufort and Habersham was an easy choice. “Meeting Ryan Bloom [the original Director of Targeted Leasing and Casting in Habersham] and hearing his vision for a neighborhood pizzeria, made me realize that this is exactly where I needed to be,” says Chef Brian.

Piace, which means “enjoy” in Italian, serves traditional pizzas, salads, and sandwiches (both hot and cold); all of which are incredibly fresh and made to order. Chef Brian and his team make their pizza dough from scratch every single day – and no, he will not share his recipe! Starting the week of April 12, a weekly (every Sunday) baked, stuffed pasta special will be added to the menu.

The Second Annual Beaufort Twilight Run and Oyster Roast Set for March 20
Beaufort’s biggest run will include an evening of races, great food and family fun – all to benefit the new Riverview Charter School

BEAUFORT, South Carolina (March 1, 2010) – Runners will take their marks at sunset on March 20, 2010, racing to benefit Riverview Charter School. The Beaufort Twilight Run and Oyster Roast drew close to 1000 people its first year from all over the Lowcountry and throughout the U.S., and this year the race organizers are expecting even bigger crowds.

The Twilight Run is open to athletes and spectators of all ages (registration required to participate). The evening kicks off at 5:30 pm with the kids’ fun run, followed by a timed, USATF sanctioned 8K run, and the 5K fun walk. The course runs through the coastal community of Habersham, with picturesque views along the marsh and beneath the sprawling live oak trees.

Race Management Systems co-owner, Danny White, responsible for the Twilight Run’s 8K timing and course certification, commented about last year’s race, “This is definitely one of the best ‘first-time’ events I’ve ever worked. The course is one of the most scenic in South Carolina, there’s no doubt…and it’s fast!”

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top male and female 8K finishers in several categories: top 3 overall winners, masters overall, active duty military, and hometown hero (Beaufort County resident). Male and female 8K age group awards will also be given. All participants of the kids’ fun run will receive an award. Registration discounts are available online to active duty military.

The post-race festival includes food, music and fun! The Oyster Roast, catered by Sea Eagle Market, is open to the general public, and will include a lot more than just oysters! Beaufort, SC - February 23, 2010 - The Third Annual Chili Cook-off was held this past Saturday, February 20 in Habersham’s Marketplace. Warmer temperatures and bright blue, sunny skies welcomed several hundred revelers to the early afternoon event. Ten Toes Up, a roots band from Murrells Inlet kept the crowd moving and provided the perfect soundtrack for the event. All of the Marketplace shops were open for business, so if you weren’t a chili eater, there were plenty of opportunities to shop and have fun.

This year, three separate divisions were competing for top honors. A total of fourteen participants vied for Best Chili in the Lowcountry in the public, service (police, fire, and USMC), and professional (restaurant) categories.

Brad and Leslie Pickel, Habersham residents and year one Chili Champions, won the public division with their coveted Louisiana recipe, a perfect blend of a sweet start and spicy finish. Many tasters said the Pickels’ chili was reminiscent of a good Louisiana gumbo. No surprise that their table looked like a little corner of Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras!

Virginia Apple and Louisa D’Alessandro, representing their absent USMC fighter pilot husbands, were the service category winners. Louisa’s husband is on loan to the USMC from the Australian Air Force. Virginia and Louy’s chili had a distinct curry vibe, thanks to the special curry paste air mailed in for the event from Anthony’s mum in Perth!

The professional category was a tough one for all the tasters, but despite valiant efforts by Maggie’s Pub & Eatery, Plums, Piace Pizza, and Bistro Patois, it was Saltus River Grill’s chili that was the crowd favorite. Saltus’ chili was a classic “Bowl of Red”; a Texas-style chili with browned beef chuck roast, simmered with fresh plum tomatoes, fresh oregano, coriander, cumin, beef stock, and toasted, dried ancho and guajillo chile paste. All of the chefs did an outstanding job, but Saltus’ Chef de Cuisine Brian Waters was clearly on his game on Saturday.

Beaufort, SC - February 3, 2010 - Even in the Lowcountry there’s a time of year when you’ve had your fill of the nippy mornings and chilly days. February typically yields the first signs that warmer days are coming and Spring is just around the corner. In the coastal town of Habersham the sure indicator that residents have had enough of winter is the annual Marketplace Chili Cook-off!

The event began a few years ago in modest fashion with a handful of Habersham Marketplace storeowners hosting a day to warm-up shoppers by offering hot chili tastings as patrons strolled the sidewalks. “In order to make it a little interesting and encourage participation we came up with the idea to create a competition”, recalls Leslie Pickel, chairperson for the Marketplace Merchants Council. “Participation has grown increasingly each time and this year we have divisions for the general public including our storeowners, service personnel and restaurant chefs from Beaufort”. Police and military personnel, chefs, homemakers or anyone who boasts a mean chili recipe are invited to participate.

This year’s cook-off, which is open to everyone, will be held on Saturday, February 20th at 1:00 pm in the Habersham Marketplace. Chili tastings and refreshments will be provided along with live entertainment. Admission tickets will be available at the event for $10 per person; Children 12 and under attend for free. Habersham Proudly Plays Host to Fun Run Benefiting The Little Red Dog Foundation

Beaufort, SC - January 22nd, 2010 - On a day in which the clouds and rain kept the sun at bay you could still feel the emanating warmth that comes from people helping to make a difference in the lives of others. On Saturday, January 16th the Junior Service League of Beaufort (JSLB) held a 5K Fun Run in the coastal town of Habersham to benefit the Little Red Dog Foundation. The Little Red Dog Foundation helps to provide specially equipped cycles for people who are mobility challenged.

The Fun Run event, organized by the JSLB, raised $2150 from eighty-three participants. With the funds raised and sponsorships from area businesses, JSLB was able to donate 6 trikes to some very special children. Volunteers and Kiwanis Club of Beaufort members assembled the trikes at a local Fire House with the help of Beaufort Firefighters. The JSLB credits the wonderful day to their members, volunteers and everyone who helped in the event.

(Beaufort, SC) – Nancy Beaupre, owner of The Storybook Shoppe of Beaufort, located at 23B-1 Market St. in the heart of the Habersham Marketplace, announced the winner of a recently implemented “Reader of the Month” program at her store. Henry Centeno, 7, from Beaufort, is the first reader honored and is the official “December Reader of the Month.”

Centeno, a first grade student at St. Peters Catholic School, was chosen for the number of books he has read from The Storybook Shoppe, on his desire to read and love for exploration. His most recent conquer was “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” by Jeff Kinney.

“He’s into a little bit of everything,” his mother, Sue Centeno, said. “He is a bookworm, that’s for sure. He’s active and involved in a variety of things, but reading is by far his favorite.”

Beaupre, committed to playing an integral role in childhood literacy, implemented the program earlier this month as a means of encouraging children to read.

“I look for children who have an honest interest,” Beaupre said. “I take note of who comes in and how often and what they do when they are here. Henry is someone I see regularly and who keeps me up to date on his latest readings, whether from my store or his own personal collection. He told me his favorite books are the ones that are 217 pages exactly (the number in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”)…now that’s inspiration”

Australian couple to provide up close and personal look at the culture of Australia

Beaufort, SC - November 5, 2009 – The Storybook Shoppe, owned by Nancy Beaupre and located at 23B-1 Market St. in the heart of the Habersham Marketplace in Beaufort, will host “Australian Story Time” on Saturday, November 14, with George and Sheila Harris from Adelaide, Australia. Three one hour sessions for kindergarten and elementary age students will be held beginning at 1 p.m. The sessions are free, but advanced registration is requested by calling (843) 379-3579 or emailing storybookshoppe@aol.com.

The Harris’, visiting family in Beaufort for several months, will read stories about wombats, kangaroos, koala’s, dingos and other animals native to Australia. Bringing items like a didgeridoo, Aboriginal dot paintings, a swagman doll and pictures of famous locations in Australia, the Harris’ hope to both educate and entertain children.

“When we saw Miss Nancy’s store in Habersham, we had to go in,” said Sheila Harris. “We were soon presented with the opportunity to share our lives and culture and we thought it would a fun learning experience for children in the area.”

Sheila Harris is a childcare worker for Goolwa Children’s Centre in Goolwa, Australia, and works with children from 6 weeks of age to kindergarten. George Harris is a retired police officer.

Storybook Shoppe Announces First Annual Halloween Story Writing Contest
Bookstore Encourages Children to Sharpen Creative Writing Skills

Beaufort, SC - October 13th, 2009 - The Storybook Shoppe, owned by Nancy Beaupre and located at 23B-1 Market St. in the heart of the Habersham Marketplace in Beaufort, will host its first annual Halloween Story Writing Contest. Beaupre is accepting submissions from 5th and 6th graders from public and private schools throughout the county through Monday, October 26. There will be a first, second and third place winner for both grades, all of whom will receive gift certificates to The Storybook Shop. Additionally, the first place winners will have their stories published on the bookstore’s website, acknowledged in its newsletter and be honored with a Halloween party at the bookstore on Saturday, October 31, during its regularly scheduled 11 a.m. story time hour. Submissions may be emailed to Beaupre at storybookshop@aol.com

“There’s really nothing like seeing the inside of a child’s mind and encouraging the development of creative skills,” Beaupre said. “I plan to open this up to more grades next year and am excited to watch this event grow.”

A small panel of judges, comprised of former and/or retired teachers, will review the stories and choose the winners in each grade. The Storybook Shoppe will provide drinks and refreshments for the first place winners’ Halloween party and Beaupre
will either read the winning stories aloud or allow the writers to do so. Winners are invited to bring a friend and wear their Halloween costumes to add to the excitement of the party.

When Nancy Beaupre was 20, a friend of her mother's gave her a gift -- a children's book about the alphabet.

"She said, 'This can be the first book in your collection,'" said Beaupre, now in her late 60s, who opened The Storybook Shoppe this month in Habersham. "Now I have over 2,000 books."

Beaupre's expansive, personal collection is housed in an upstairs room of her home, but the tomes that line the shelves of her children's bookstore also reflect her passion for improving childhood literacy.

About 75 percent of the books at the shop have won literary awards such as Newberry and Caldecott Medals; the rest Beaupre carefully selects based on expert reviews. Classics like "Babar" and "Cordurory" are mixed in with brand-new releases.

"I try to have things that have great value to children," said Beaupre, who holds degrees in teaching and child development from Michigan State University. "So far, I have had a great response from people about the kind of books that I have there."

The Storybook Shoppe is the second children's bookstore Beaupre has owned. Her first was in Michigan, where she lived until the mid-1980s when her husband, Larry, was transferred to Australia. After eight years Down Under, the couple and their son moved back to Michigan -- but the warm, Lowcountry weather drew them to Habersham in 2005.

"People tend to think that this is a retirement community, and it's not at all," Beaupre said. "There are a lot of children at Habersham. They all call me 'Miss Nancy,' and when they see me on the street they call out 'Hi, Miss Nancy.' They're just darling."

The neighborhood children and their parents have kept business steady at The Storybook Shoppe since its opening. Beaupre plans to hold events that will draw kids and adults from all over Beaufort County and across the state.

An actor portraying statesman Ben Franklin will be in the shop Tuesday, giving brief history lessons and ushering in Independence Day.

"We're just trying to do a lot of different things to excite children about books," Beaupre said. "It's a shop that everyone seems to love when they come in, and that makes me happy. It's fun to come to work every day."

Outdoor Life Magazine Ranks Beaufort a Top Outdoors Town

Beaufort, SC - June 16th, 2009 - Beaufort was named the 108th best town for sportsmen by Outdoor Life Magazine in its June/July edition, joining the publication's second annual list of 200 towns across the country.

Numerous variables were used to determine these rankings, including affordable housing, unemployment rates and the number of huntable and fishable species. Ultimately, Lewistown in Indiana topped the list while Seneca (48th) served as the only other city from South Carolina.

For an avid local fisherman like Nick Russell, Beaufort's appearance on this list is no surprise. In fact, in Russell's mind, Beaufort deserves a much higher ranking than 108th. "As far as I'm concerned, Beaufort's number one," said Russell, who works part time at the Beaufort Boat Dock and Supply store. "We've got just as many species of fish as anybody else, and it's the beautiful water environment and many landings that make Beaufort County such an appealing place, as far as boating is concerned. "It's southern hospitality at its greatest."

It is just the latest attention Beaufort has received for being an outdoors destination. In 2008, Field & Stream Magazine listed Beaufort No. 2 on its list of best fishing towns in America with a population under 100,000 residents.
The magazine called Beaufort "a saltwater paradise," and went on to say "fishing-wise, you couldn't expect to cover all the flats and inshore options for redfish, seatrout, and even tarpon at certain times of the year, in one lifetime."

The first annual Beaufort Twilight Run & Oyster Roast exceeds all expectations.

Beaufort, SC - March 23rd, 2009 - The first annual Beaufort Twilight Run, sanctioned by USA Track & Field and organized by the new Riverview Charter School, attracted over 700 people to the event held on Saturday, March 21st in the town of Habersham. “This is definitely one of the best ‘first-time’ events we’ve ever worked.” Remarked Danny White, RMS Sports co-owner and USATF/IAAF approved measurer. “The course was one of the most scenic courses in South Carolina, there’s no doubt. You couldn’t have asked for a better course”, continued White. The certified and chip-timed 8K race course, set amid the waterfront parks and charming neighborhood streets, attracted 240 runners from all over the southeast circuit.

The event also featured a “Kid’s Fun Run” with 200 children participating and a 5K walking course that had over 300 participants. The Twilight Run was followed by an awards ceremony and after-party featuring an oyster roast with over 500 paid admissions.

Event organizer, Jody Hayward, and race director, Lauren Kelly, were quite pleased with the participation level and community support for the benefit of Riverview Charter School. Riverview Charter School is a free, public school authorized by the Beaufort County School District and open to all Beaufort County students (K-8th Grade) opening August 17, 2009. “It went very well,” said Hayward, “We really see this event growing in the years to come and we can’t wait for next year!” The event was the first big fundraising endeavor for the charter school and raised an estimated $10,000. Habersham developer, Bob Turner, was also thrilled to see the event take root. “The run showcased how well-suited our town is for hosting events and providing a wonderful, shared experience for visitors and residents alike. We’re thrilled to be the host location and can’t wait to see it grow.” Plans are already being discussed on improving next year’s Twilight Run with larger prizes to hopefully attract over 1,000 participants. Beaufort chalks up another accolade

Beaufort has added yet another accolade to an already-decorated national reputation.
The editors of Money magazine named Beaufort one of its top-6 "terrific towns on the water," for soon-to-be-retired baby boomers.

"This confirms what we've been saying all along," said Mike Ryan,2008 chairman of the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce's board of directors. "The activity and vibrancy of our community continues to shine -- even in an economic downturn."

The article cited easy access to top-notch medical care, area golf courses, the Beaufort River and the area's history as a backdrop for a handful of famous films as the reasons why Beaufort made the list.

Beaufort is joined on Money's list by Dunedin, Fla.; Sequim, Wash.; Durango, Colo.; St. Joseph, Mich.; and Marble Falls, Texas.

"This is another wonderful accolade for our community," said Joy Locke,executive director of Main Street Beaufort, USA. "We have a wonderful retirement community in Beaufort, and what's great about our retirees is how involved they are in our community."
